IRCC Backlog Grows Amid New Measures to Address Delays

The backlog of immigration applications at Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to rise, reaching 1,097,000 as of September 30, 2024. This marks a 1.73% increase from August's 1,078,300 and a significant jump from July's 1,002,400, the first time in months the backlog exceeded one million.

Despite the growing backlog, IRCC processed 1,353,600 applications within service standards in September, showing a 0.83% improvement over August. Efforts to address delays include the Federal Court’s Study Permit Pilot Project, reducing judicial review times for rejected study permits from 14–18 months to under five months.

IRCC has also extended Post Graduation Work Permits for master’s graduates to three years and prioritized applications from essential workers. The Immigration Levels Plan 2024–2026 aims to ease the backlog with reduced permanent resident targets and the introduction of temporary resident admission goals. Watch for further updates as IRCC tackles these challenges.

Canada Ranks as the Third Safest Country for Travelers in 2025

Canada has been named the third safest country in the world for travelers in 2025, according to Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP).

This annual ranking placed Canada just behind Iceland (#1) and Australia (#2), surpassing nations like Switzerland (#5), New Zealand (#6), and the United Kingdom (#13). BHTP’s assessment is based on surveys of American travelers, examining safety from crime, terrorism, health risks, and inclusivity for diverse groups, including LGBTQIA+ travelers and travelers of color.

The rankings also incorporate data from sources like the Global Peace Index and GeoSure Global. Canada excelled in categories such as transportation safety (#1), health measures (#1), and safety from violent crime and terrorism (#2 each).

Additionally, in BHTP’s Safe Travel Hall of Fame, which evaluates historical rankings since 2018, Canada secured third place overall, reaffirming its reputation as a top destination for secure and inclusive travel experiences.
